More poetry from Civsum
Katie the cat and her country cousin.
There’s a Florida panther on the citrus tree.
Calmly considering Katie with ease.
“Yes you may stare, as I’m really quite rare
I’m one of the few, not yet dead”,he said.
Katie fluffed herself up to her puffiest.
The panther however, wasn’t impressed.
“You’re only a moggy domesticus
Not swift, sleek and handsome like us.”
“Why are you here?” mewed Katie in fear.
(Hoping it wouldn’t be moving near).
Her hopes were dashed when the panther replied,
“I’m checking out habitats far and wide
And Myakka State Park I haven’t yet tried.”
“The fearsome wild pigs there will soon see you off”
Cried Katie, but the panther just scoffed.
“Wild pigs and their tusks may be a bore
But we can outrun them, that’s for sure.”
“But the ‘gators; those teeth in that big scary mouth!”
“Oh really small puss, we live down in the south
In The Great Cyprus Swamp by the Seminole Res
Where there’s ‘gators galore it has to be said.
It’s not ‘gators and such that cause us to fear
It’s our range getting smaller, year after year.
Our fields are poisoned by pesticides
Casinos and condos now reside
Where we used to roam freely with places to hide”.
Stretching itself the panther arose.
”Would you care for some biscuits before you go?”
Asked Katie, who hoped her relief wouldn’t show.
“No thanks” said the panther and with tail atwitch,
He flew over the fence and into the ditch.
Off to the pipes that run under the road
In search of somewhere they could call home.
Katie sighed and felt very sad
The panther’s tale was so bad.
Why can’t we just share?
She thought with despair.
There’s room for us all, if enough of us care.
Stella
I’m the sole keeper
Of our memories now.
Such as the time,
Helpless with laughter
We leaned in to each other,
As a teenager rolled his eyes.
The cause of the laughter
May still be told as a tale.
But the sharing, the caring,
The feeling, the reeling
Back through our days.
Are now mine alone to hold.
Of so many memories
Through so many years
Am I the sole keeper now.
